If you’ve ever used math card decks in your classroom, you already know what happens.
Students are learning.
Cards are moving fast.
And somehow, every deck ends up mixed together.
After dealing with that more times than I can count, I started doing something incredibly simple that saves so much time.
Number the Decks
Before giving the cards to students, I write a small number on the corner of each deck.
Every card in that deck gets the same number.
Now when cards get mixed up (because they always do), it takes seconds to sort them again.
Just look for the number and rebuild the deck.
Why This Works So Well
✔ Students can help sort cards
✔ Clean-up is much faster
✔ Missing cards are easier to spot
Even my first graders can quickly organize the cards when they see the numbers.
NOTE: Our math program is INVESTIGATIONS.
Two More Helpful Tips
I also keep each numbered deck in a separate baggie so everything stays super organized.
It’s such a tiny classroom trick, but it makes a big difference during math centers and small-group math time.
and...
One last MUST-DO for my students: all cards MUST be facing the same way when placed back in the baggie. Saves the next group lots of time setting up for their game.
Sometimes the simplest ideas are the ones that make the biggest difference in the classroom.
