When Someone Forgets Snack, Cheerios Save the Day

If you teach young students, you already know this truth:

Someone forgets snack almost every single day.

Maybe it stayed on the kitchen counter.
Maybe it’s still in the car or on the bus.
Maybe the lunchbox arrived mysteriously empty.
Maybe it fell out of its bag or container and splattered across the floor.

And then you see the little worried face.

“I don’t have a snack.”

That’s exactly why I keep a Cheerio Emergency Snack Box in my classroom.

Classroom emergency snack jar filled with Cheerio snack bags for students who forget snack.

Our Classroom “Just in Case” Snack

At the beginning of the year, I ask families if they are willing to donate a box of plain Cheerios to our classroom.

Nothing fancy.
Just simple, reliable Cheerios.

Whenever a student forgets their snack, they quietly grab a small baggie from the box so they can still enjoy snack time with everyone else.

No stress.
No embarrassment.
Problem solved.

Why Cheerios Work So Well

After many years in the classroom, I’ve learned Cheerios are the perfect backup snack.

They are:

Nut-free friendly for most classrooms and relatively healthy
Easy to portion into baggies
Not messy
Kid-approved
Easy for families to grab a box and donate

And the best part?

Kids know I have their back and then can focus on the work after snack.

A Simple System That Works

Here’s how I keep it organized:

  1. When I'm running low, I ask families to donate a box of Cheerios.  (I send a thank you via SEESAW with their child holding the box.)

  2. I pour them into snack-size baggies.

  3. The baggies stay in our Cheerio Snack Box where kids have easy access.  (Sometimes a child takes one if breakfast was missed.)

No big announcements.
No student feeling singled out.

Just a quick solution.

It’s the Little Things

Sometimes the smallest classroom routines make the biggest difference.

A simple baggie of Cheerios is a must for my classroom.  Having a simple backup snack system can make your day run so much smoother.

Because in a busy classroom, someone will forget snack.

But with a little planning, no one has to go without.

Note: I ask families to donate PLAIN Cheerios now. Years ago I requested graham cracker snacks instead… but those were way too appealing. Suddenly half the class was “forgetting” their snack every day. Funny how that works. 😄
